Cross Country Newsletter

Dear X-Club enthusiasts

Well, the bad news for all of us this past week was that rates were left unchanged, Eskom’s astounding price hike (three times inflation) was approved, and fuel prices are set to rise again.
But the good news is that being outside and off the beaten track is still free. Take advantage of one of life’s remaining simple pleasures, and get out of the city whenever you can manage it. If you’re going to be adventuring in your 4x4 (chasing snow, perhaps?) this month, be sure to wrap up warmly and send us your stories and photos.

As usual, we congratulate our X-Club winners and remind our readers that all X-club members are eligible for prizes – just for belonging to the club.

All the best.

Debbie and the X-Club team

Bullet-proof Discovery

In partnership with a group called Centigon, which claims to be the world's largest and most experienced armouring company, Land Rover has been assembling attack-resistant versions of nearly all its products, from the Defender to the big-bodied Range Rover. The new armoured Discovery, a ‘more affordable’ choice at around R3.6-million, will be available in South Africa to B6 resistance. This means it can withstand an attack with an AK-74 assault rifle! Read the full story HERE.

South Africa's big seven

No longer will South Africa attract tourists for its mere five animal must-sees. Two sea creatures, the whale and the shark, have officially made up what will now be referred to as the Big Seven. Read more HERE.

Virtually indestructable cell phone

Land Rover’s new S1 cellphone has been rated as the world’s first IP-67 GSM cellphone. This means you can operate it in temperatures from -20 to 55-degrees Celsius, sms from 1m underwater, talk for 18 hours continuously, and drive a 400kg quad bike over it. All those traditional cellphone functions, such as a 2MP waterproof camera with built-in flash, GPS, torch light, FM radio, 2GB memory slot, J2ME Java for mobile, and WAP browsing, are onboard too. Read more HERE.

VW double-cab truck in the pipeline

A monstrous Volkswagen truck, due to be launched in Europe in 2010, will be called the Amarok. You may have heard about it last year, but news is out that it’ll hit SA shores in the last half of 2010. The unusual name means ‘he loves stones’, which may turn out to be rather fitting. Read more and see a pic HERE.
